3 about
Every child is capable of success. If given the opportunity, every young person can achieve greatness. When students attend academically rigorous schools, engage in relevant educational experiences and have meaningful relationships with adults who are committed to their growth and development they can and will reach their full intellectual, professional and personal potential.

Over fifteen years ago, a small group of people with a big idea believed these things to be true and invested their time, energy and resources into establishing the Fund for Advancement of Minorities through Education to support financially disadvantaged African American youth. Initially, FAME, a non-profit organization designed to provide scholarship funds for students with financial need to attend participating independent schools, partnered with The Ellis School, Sewickley Academy, Winchester Thurston School, St. Edmund's Academy, and Shady Side Academy to provide need-based scholarships to five African American students. Today, FAME continues to partner with those five schools, as well as the newest member of the consortium, The Kiski School, to provide need-based scholarships to 66 students. We do not only provide these students with financial support but also with supplemental academic programming and tutors, leadership skill development training and character building opportunities, and the moral support and encouragement that every student needs and deserves. We are proud to say that 76 scholars have graduated from participating independent schools with FAME's assistance. All of these young people have gone onto four year colleges and universities, all graduate, and over 50% return to Pittsburgh to live and work. Right now there are FAME Alumni at Harvard Medical School, Columbia Law School, The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the University of Pittsburgh's Business School, and working as financial advisors, school counselors and engineers, just to name a few.

Today, at FAME, we do not just believe these lofty statements to be true of all children, we know them to be true. We witness the truth of these declarations in the faces and in the lives of the amazingly talented, and uniquely prepared, FAME Scholars and Alumni we are privileged to serve. They achieve success each day, they have proven themselves to be exceptional despite the financial indicators that some would say suggest they wouldn't be, and they continuously strive toward the intellectual, professional and personal excellence for which they are destined.

FAME is committed to addressing issues of educational equity in the Pittsburgh region and doing what is right for a critical mass of African American youth and families in Western Pennsylvania. We are educating the leaders of tomorrow, one child at a time.

Constance F. 8 feature
In March 2010, 38 students embarked on a journey to explore 18 different schools from New Jersey to Georgia, including Ivy League institutions, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, large state schools and small liberal arts campuses. These students, grades 9-12, were enrolled in one of five FAME partner schools. The goal of the tour was to ensure students of color had the opportunity to discover a diverse body of universities to they can make informed decisions about where they would like to attend college.

In addition to touring campuses and hearing presentations from admissions representatives at each school, students also spoke directly with current students about their experiences at their respective schools, ate at school dining facilities to gain a genuine understanding of life on campus, and explored some of the cities in which schools were located. While in Washington, D.C., students visited the Capitol building and met with Representative Jason Altmire. These experiences not only provided information about the academic landscape of each school but gave students a sense of community life outside the classroom.

Participating Student Demographics

Colleges and Universities Visited
[empty string] [empty string] [empty string] [empty string] Yes 4 10 10 10 [empty string] internal_fullwidth College Tour 139 140 College Tour 93 No Yes 64 Approved 1 /feature/

15 missionhistory
FAME'S Mission

To provide African American students access to college preparatory education at participating independent schools in the Greater Pittsburgh area through the provision of need based financial assistance. FAME also provides support to scholars and alumni throughout their academic careers. Ultimately, through this work, FAME's intention is to increase the number of African American leaders in the Greater Pittsburgh region.

FAME'S History

The concept of FAME developed in the early 1990's out of concern for the appallingly low number of African Americans in leadership in the Greater Pittsburgh area and the sparse number of minority students enrolled in area independent schools. After leaders in the independent school community at that time became familiar with a scholarship program in Cincinnati, the Fund for Independent Schools of Cincinnati (FISC), whose mission was to "help develop a new generation of Black leadership in Greater Cincinnati," FAME decided to establish a similar program in this region. Hoping to simultaneously respond to the racial disparities in Pittsburgh's independent schools and within the leadership and workforce, FAME founders established a scholarship fund for students with financial need to attend one of five participating private schools. Those schools were The Ellis School, Sewickley Academy, Shady Side Academy, St. Edmund's Academy and Winchester Thurston School. For the first time since its inception, FAME welcomed a new school into its consortium in 2010: The Kiski School.

When FAME began during the 1994-1995 school year there were five scholars, one per school. In 1999, the first FAME Scholar graduated from high school and went on to college. The number of scholars and the significant amount of aid that FAME contributes to the funding partnership has grown steadily since the program's inception. This year FAME has an enrollment of 65 scholars -- over ten times that of its original five. In addition, 76 students have graduated from high school as FAME Scholars, all going on to college.
[empty string] [empty string] [empty string] [empty string] Yes 3 17 17 17 [empty string] internal Mission & History 4 5 Mission & History 5 Yes Yes 3 Approved 1 /about/missionhistory/

32 informationalfair
FAME hosts an Information Fair at the Kingsley Center in East Liberty each year to address the lack of awareness in the African American community of the funds available to attend independent schools. Each informational fair is highly publicized and designed to provide African American families with an opportunity to learn more about independent school education in a comfortable, non-threatening environment. The Fairs inform potential students and their families of scholarship opportunities available at independent schools, through FAME, and directly from the school itself. This has proved to be an excellent resource for the schools to connect with African American families and has provided information to a large number of individuals in struggling communities. The overwhelming response to each informational fair demonstrates the strong parental desire within communities of color for schools that offer high quality education. These informational fairs increase the pool of African American candidates eligible for independent school admission.

Admissions directors from all of FAME's six partner schools are present at the information fair and serve on a panel to present a variety of topics about the independent school admissions process and experience.
Please click here to view the postcard from the 2011 Informational Fair. However, FAME Scholars are also assigned a faculty liaison to help monitor and support their needs, increasing their potential for success. 54 cfredfetterolf
1928 - 2012

"There was a time when Alcoa executive C. Fred Fetterolf would carry his Bible into company headquarters or the Duquesne Club discreetly, so as not to attract attention to his devout Christianity among fellow corporate titans.

By the time Mr. Fetterolf ended his tenure as Alcoa's president in 1991, however, he was one of the most open business leaders in the region about his faith and how it guided him.

Mr. Fetterolf became a leader in a wide variety of civic and philanthropic activities during and after his Alcoa leadership, some with a religious slant -- including chairmanship of the 1993 Billy Graham Crusade at Three Rivers Stadium -- and others without, such as raising scholarship funds in the FAME program to help African-American students attend Pittsburgh's most prestigious private schools.

"In his business career, he reached the pinnacle as president of Alcoa, and in his life, both during and since Alcoa, his wisdom and wealth touched the lives of countless young people," said Richard Jewell, Grove City College president.

Mr. Fetterolf recently led a $69 million capital fundraising effort for the college, his alma mater.

The Edgeworth resident, formerly of Sewickley and Sewickley Heights, died Sunday at Villa St. Joseph in Baden.

At age 83, he never recovered from a stroke that occurred Dec. 31.

Mr. Fetterolf grew up in Venango County and served in the Navy before becoming a 5-foot-5, three-sport athlete as a chemistry major at Grove City College.

He took a job as a sales trainee for Alcoa in 1952, and over the next 39 years he climbed the corporate ladder through a succession of mid- and upper-level positions in other cities, as well as at the Pittsburgh headquarters. He became president of the world's largest aluminum manufacturer in 1984.

Mr. Fetterolf resigned in 1991 during an apparent rift with Alcoa Chairman Paul O'Neill, who had been chosen by the company's board four years earlier for the senior position, although details of their differences were never publicized. Before then, Mr. Fetterolf had helped his longtime company out of the early 1980s recession, focusing on a diversification strategy while Alcoa reached annual sales of $10.9 billion.

He was known by then for his passion for the Pittsburgh region and its disadvantaged citizenry, as well as his faith. Mr. Fetterolf had become increasingly committed to Christianity as a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Sewickley in the late 1970s and 1980s.

He served on numerous corporate and university boards while also joining a small group of CEOs who held regular Bible discussion sessions at the Duquesne Club. He received local brothership awards for bridging divides between blacks and whites and promoting harmony between Christians and Jews.

"It's a great support mechanism to meet the problems of the day," Mr. Fetterolf once told the Central Westmoreland Chamber of Commerce of his Bible study. He spoke publicly then and at other times of the need for the corporate sector to devote itself to Christian principles and take part in addressing social problems such as homelessness, hunger and abuse.

After he left Alcoa, Mr. Fetterolf spent much of the 1990s as chairman of the Working Together Consortium, an umbrella group of corporate, civic and government leaders who focused attention on jobs creation in the region.

He also became chairman and leading fundraiser for many years of Imani Christian Academy in East Hills, created to give alternative educational opportunities to young African-Americans.

He and his wife, Fran, a Grove City College classmate he married in 1953, were known for hosting some of the classiest fundraising dinners of Pittsburgh's social scene for Imani at their former Sewickley Heights home, as well as impressive Christmas parties attended by a mix of races and religions.

His wife survives him, along with one daughter, Regan Fetterolf of Edgeworth; one son, Scott Fetterolf of Sewickley Heights; and five grandchildren."

Tuesday, February 07, 2012

By Gary Rotstein, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Fred speaking to the crowd after receiving the Mathieson Award during the 2010 FAME Annual Luncheon.

Fred's dedication and service to FAME and the Scholars that we serve will never be forgotten.

[empty string] [empty string] [empty string] [empty string] Yes 4 57 57 57 [empty string] staff_bio C. 84 collegetourleadershifttrip
Each spring, FAME takes High School Scholars on a College Tour or Leadershift Tour. The tours will alternate yearly with a focus on visiting colleges or visiting leadership opportunities.

In the spring of 2011, FAME brought 43 bright and talented African American students, grades 9-12, to Washington, DC and Baltimore, MD to explore leadership and the process of social change up close. These students, currently enrolled in one of five participating independent schools (The Ellis School, The Kiski School, Sewickley Academy, Shady Side Academy or Winchester Thurston School) were challenged to reflect the impact of historical leadership and the importance of African American leaders today. Many of these students are leaders in their own schools and communities, participate in athletics, hold membership in student groups, are honors scholars and officers in their Student Governments. This journey encouraged these students to expand upon their sense of what it means to be a leader and their understanding of their role in shaping the future while engaging them in dialogue about civic engagement, the importance of historical social efforts and how their active involvement in the issues of today can tip the scales toward success and the success of the broader community.
[empty string] [empty string] [empty string] [empty string] Yes 3 93 93 93 [empty string] internal College Tours/Leadershift Trips 138 141 College Tours/Leadershift Trips 8 Yes Yes 1 Approved 1 /programs/collegetourleadershifttrip/

91 fameacademy
Part of FAME’s mission is to provide African American students with access to college preparatory education through need-based financial assistance. FAME Academy furthers this mission by providing a sound academic foundation to students prior to and during the early stages of their college preparatory educational experience. Our intention is to maximize the long-term academic potential of talented and motivated young African American students by engaging them during the early stages of their educational journey, prior to attending an independent school.

FAME Academy is a rigorous 3-year independent school preparatory program meant to prepare area middle school students for success at an independent high school. Through the FAME Academy, students can build their academic foundation, enhance their education with a college oriented curriculum, and be taught by some of the area’s best independent school teachers.

FAME Academy faculty and staff will provide students with the skills and support needed to succeed in competitive academic programs. Students complete most of the curriculum during a daily, 6-week summer program (including a one-week boarding component), and remain engaged and challenged throughout the school year by attending weekly classes on Saturday mornings.

While enrolled in the FAME Academy, students will work with experienced, independent school teachers. They will be part of a cohort of highly motivated and hardworking peers. In addition to supporting one another, the students will have the support of student advisors to guide and mentor them, leadership training, and test preparation and admissions assistance (for when they are ready to apply to independent school).

At the completion of the 3-year FAME Academy program, the intention is that Academy graduates will be well-prepared to not only matriculate, but to excel at one of FAME’s partner independent schools. This is an excellent opportunity for youth to learn and grow in a challenging and fun summer program free of charge.

Click here to see our brochure.

Click here to download FAME Academy Application.

[empty string] [empty string] [empty string] [empty string] Yes 3 102 102 102 [empty string] internal FAME Academy 142 143 FAME Academy 8 Yes Yes 1 Approved 1 /programs/fameacademy/
