Pia Campbell, FAME Scholar '14

Pia Campbell comes to FAME from Pittsburgh Sterrett Classical Academy 6-8, and is currently a sophomore at Shady Side Academy. Pia has been with FAME since the eighth grade. At Shady Side, Pia has been involved in basketball, soccer, tennis, track and field, Project Play, Local Community Club, and Haitian Connection. While some students experience some difficulty when moving from the public school curriculum to the rigorous academic expectations of independent schools, Pia was not one of them: she earned all A's her first year at Shady Side. Furthermore, Pia was awarded the Investing Now certificate for achieving academic high honor roll status. Though this semester is not over, it is clear that Pia will continue to succeed in school.

What does Pia have to say about her experience with FAME?

Opportunities are worthless unless you take advantage of them.

Michael Sutton, FAME Scholar '12

Michael entered the FAME program in 2006 as a seventh grader because his mother wanted more academically for her son than Aliquippa Middle School could offer. Michael is now a senior FAME Scholar at Sewickley Academy and is an excellent student. Michael, who will be the first person in his family to graduate from college, says that what he likes most about Sewickley Academy is the challenge. In addition to academics, Michael also takes advantage of extracurricular and leadership opportunities available to him: he is President of the Diversity Student Association, he co-authored and performed in an original theater piece with Sewickley's Drama Department in Scotland at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, he helped form Sewickley's Lower School Mentoring Program, and his been a percussionist in the school's concert band and jazz ensemble since starting high school. Though Michael has not made any decisions about where he would like to attend college, he is considering an Ivy League school for biomedical engineering and possibly continuing on to medical school.

What does Michael have to say about his experience with FAME?

FAME gave me the opportunity to attend a school I never thought possible. As a result, I have received the best education I possibly can, and for that, I will always be grateful. FAME has given me the desire and determination to do the best that I can. I know how blessed I am to be a FAME Scholar, and I could never truly express my gratitude, appreciation, and life-learning experiences in words.
